Introducing artists: Marcus Wendt (DE) and Vera-Maria Glahn (DE), Tim Knapen (BE) and Peter Koraca (SI). This time our focus is on the exciting subject of Data Visualisation where the artists have created an original work of art for this exhibition based on their own experiences or surroundings. We are very excited to see the results and hear about their projects at the launching and artist talk.
DATE: 13th of May 2010.
PLACE: Mezzaninen http://kunsthalcharlottenborg.dk/mezzanin

Private bits
“The data cloud is growing at higher rates everyday. It can be regarded as a new kind of shared long term memory of modern humanity, consisting of networked databases hidden in cooled basements. We strap on goggles in the shape of search engines and pick out particles of information from the cloud. The goggles provide a narrow angle of view and in effect functions more like horse blinds. Behind us sits the coachman in the shape of corporate directors, pulling our head in the direction of the highest bidder. In order to truly benefit from this new kind of shared memory, we must acquire the skill to construct our own digital optics. This skill is called data visualisation and it can be used to crystallise areas of the cloud into concrete form, visible to the eye.
With the theme “private bits” the artists of this season at netfilmmakers are asked to explore themselves through data visualization. Instead of trying to construct a macro scope to grasp the totality of the cloud, they will build microscopes and zoom in on patterns in their own lives. They will mine existing data or sample new data from their everyday actions. Through free experimentation with the material they will hopefully make findings that illuminate otherwise invisible habits that they may or may not share with rest of the modern world. What findings they choose to share and how they chose to present them is completely up to them.”
About the curator:
Born 1982, Copenhagen.
Carl Emil creates interactive audiovisual systems in the field of art and design. With a core interest in music and the cross-modal perception of sound and visuals, he explores the machine as a generative tool. Previous works shows great interest in augmented/skewed reality, data visualisation and audiovisual instruments.
Since 2003, he has been active in the Danish interactive art scene, contributing with works for public and private exhibitions spaces, music and poetry scenes and the web. Works have been featured at Aros in århus, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde and the eARTS festival in Shanghai among other places.
Receiving an MA grade in interaction design in 2008, he pursued a freelance career, developing systems for both cultural and commercial clients, working individually or as part of teams. He also teaches in Processing, a programming tool for designers.
The digital tools vary, but often include Processing/Java, Unity/C# and Max/MSP/Jitter.
